"Heavy African" is the first mission of Metal Slug 5.
Mission Synopsis[]
The heroes begin their counterattack against the Natives and the Ptolemaic Army located in the deep jungle. They are rafted through a river to reach the Corridor of Fire. The temple itself is a trap-filled tunnel with fire spewing from walls, lava rivers, a spiked ceiling, maggots, and Natives. All routes lead outside where the once-dreaded Metal Rear drives itself in.
Once the base is cleared, the heroes exit the jungle. Meanwhile, a group of Natives frolic around a mysterious mask that fell from the sky. One of them replaces their mask with the new one, and a lighting bolt strikes him down. He rises up slightly acting somewhat unaffected while the others are stunned.
This is the only mission with Transformations; collecting food items will turn the heroes fat.
Locations[]
- Jungle River: The heroes are on a canoe paddled by a POW. The first river is full of ambushing Guerrilla Soldiers. After crashing to a waterfall, the heroes jump to a second canoe chased by Jet Hammer-Yangs. The canoe leads to the Corridor of Fire.
- Temple Entrance: The temple starts with a spiked ceiling lowering down. Crouch at the small pits to avoid being crushed.
- The Firewall: A hallway where the straight crevices on walls spew out streams of fire. The mission splits from here.
- Top Route:
- Corridor of Fire: Take the top route. The heroes fights Guerrillas and Natives over lava pits. The hallway ends with a split route that both exit to the boss arena; the bottom floor has an SV-001 that can be used against the Metal Rear.
- Bottom Route:
- Hidden Hallways: Crawl down the bottom route. The Slug Gunner is found here inside of a Super Vehicle Crate. The route splits again.
- Route 1:
- Deeper Corridor Climb the stairs and continue right. The heroes jump over a few lava pits between fire-spewing walls and fights the Natives. The Slug Gunner is left here before exiting to the boss arena.
- Route 2:
- Black Hound Testing Site: Climb the stairs and walk left. The heroes find a Ptolemaic testing site gone awry. They fight against the malfunctioning Black Hound. The Slug Gunner is left behind once the fight ends.
- Narrow Passageway: An exit through a cramped hallway. Full of bats and maggots.

Trivia[]
- Early publications and the debug level select originally refer this mission as the third mission. The Metal Rear's concept art labels it as the fourth mission boss.
- Despite the mission title, the design of the masks the Natives are wearing, the Mayan-esque temples, and scenery give them a passing resemblance to Incan/Aztec culture which are common to South America and Mexico. Metal Slug Attack further supports this by being set in Brazil, a country in South America.
