Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, known in Japan as Dairantō Smash Brothers SPECIAL, is the fifth game in the Super Smash Bros. franchise created by Nintendo. The most notable thing of this game is the inclusion of all characters who were playable in all previous entries of the franchise for the first time since Super Smash Bros. Melee in 2001.
Gameplay[]
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a platform fighting game. Instead of winning by depleting an opponent's life bar, players seek to knock opposing characters off the stage. As a character's percentage rises, they can be knocked progressively farther by an opponent's attacks. To KO an opponent, the player must send that character flying off the edge of the stage, which is not an enclosed arena but rather an area with open boundaries, usually a set of suspended platforms. When a character is knocked off the stage, he or she may use jumping moves to (attempt to) return; as some characters' jumps are longer-ranged, they may have an easier time "recovering" than others. Additionally, some characters are heavier than others, making it harder for an opponent to knock them off the edge but likewise harder to recover.
Play controls are greatly simplified in comparison to other fighting games. While traditional fighting games such as Street Fighter or Soul Calibur require the player to memorize button-input combinations (sometimes lengthy and complicated, and often specific to a character), Super Smash Bros. uses the same one-attack-button, one-control-stick-direction combinations to access all moves for all characters.
Characters are not limited to constantly facing their opponent, but may run around freely. Super Smash Bros. also implements blocking and dodging mechanics, which can be used both on the ground and in the air. Grabbing and throwing other characters are also possible, allowing for a large variety of ways to attack (around 25, on average).
One additional major element is the inclusion of battle items, of which players can control the frequency of appearance. There are conventional "battering items" with which a player may directly hit an opponent, throwable items, shooting items, health pickups, assists from another character not part of the roster, and Smash Balls that allow a player to activate their ultimate Final Smash attack.
Relation to Metal Slug[]
While the characters and world doesn't appear per se, five tracks of the franchise appears in the King of Fighters Stadium stage as part of the wide selection of Fatal Fury and SNK music this stage (and Terry's DLC as a whole) has to offer.
The Metal Slug tracks that play in this stage are:
- Main Theme from Metal Slug - METAL SLUG (New arrangement)
- Assault Theme - METAL SLUG 1-3 (New arrangement)
- Final Attack - METAL SLUG 1-6 (from Metal Slug 5)
- Judgement - METAL SLUG 2
- Blue Water Fangs (The Island of Dr. Moreau) - METAL SLUG 3
Ralf and Clark appear as part of the stage's background randomly in a new match. Although part of The King of Fighters, they've been mentioned in Terry's spotlight video as also being part of the Metal Slug series.
