Wandering at Midnight is the second mission from Metal Slug 3.
Mission Synopsis[]
The Regular Army's original plan was to investigate a freak airline accident located near an unknown radiation that was emitted somewhere on the mountains thirty-six hours ago. When the heroes arrived and saw a group of Scientists running away from the scene, it revealed that the radiation has been turning everyone (including Rebel Army soldiers) in the vicinity into Zombies. Further investigation also lead to a discovery of a new species inside a cave filled with missing frozen soldiers.[2]
Locations[]
- Passenger Plane Crash Site: Several survivors of a brutal plane crash are in serious pain and cannot move. The zombies can turn them into their own by spitting out infectious fluids from their bodies. Those fluids can also turn the player into a zombie. Utan is found on top of the crash and helps out as long as the players don't enter the cave.
- Iceman Cave: A long underground corridor with literal freezing temperatures due to combination of cold climate and enormous refrigerators letting out cold air. The Sasquatches are found here ready to turn the players into snowmen and clobber them. Once reaching the Elephant Slug alongside a snowy blockage, the zombies enter the cave and kill the remaining Sasquatches. Now the players have to exit back where they once came from. The Elephant Slug unfortunately gets trapped in a frozen pool again.
- Rebel Site: Various Rebel vehicles situated on top of a highway. Tar Men are found inside the Rebel Vans.
- Research Site: Deep in the woods is a group of spotlights and computers surrounding a large meteorite. Reaching here causes the lights to explode and tall floating creatures to emerge from it. Once they are eliminated, the meteorite explodes, and the Monoeye UFO emerges to fight.

Trivia[]

The unused route (Area 2:2 in Debug Select).
- This is the last mission in the main series where the entire mission is continuous from beginning to end.
- An unused route exists in this mission. Its entrance was supposed to appear next to where the President was but was removed in the final release[3]. The route is a recreation of the third mission's climbing section from Metal Slug: Super Vehicle-001 but at night and with multiple elevators (likely for testing purposes) and Tar Men. Finishing this route sends the player to the Rebel site.
- The military trucks and tanks seen at the Rebel site section are based on the Soviet Ural-43206 4×4 trucks and T-55 tanks respectively.
