The Zantetsu Sword is a knife (or hatchet) that imbues the holder's melee attack with large waves of energy, powerful enough to destroy armored vehicles. It can cut through the enemy's bullets and weaponry, at the cost of a small ammo count, so use it wisely.
Unlike other special weapons, the Zantetsu Sword can only be fired sideways.
In Metal Slug Attack, the Special Forces soldiers have their own version called the Sky Splitting Sword. The energy wave has a shorter travel than the Zantetsu Sword.

- Zantetsu (斬鉄, Zantetsu) is Japanese for "iron-cutting", making this weapon an "Iron Cutting Sword".
- As Ralf's melee attacks are quicker than other characters, there is a shorter interval between each shot when Ralf uses the Zantetsu Sword.
- If shot correctly, the Zantetsu Sword is the strongest weapon in the Metal Slug series.
